The holiday season is upon us. If you will be traveling for Thanksgiving or Christmas or both, here are some items to pack in your under-the-seat carry on to make the journey go a little smoother.
5 Things to Pack for Any Trip
5 More Musts for Longer Trips
Will you be on the plane for a long stretch? Be sure to pack these five items to help you relax and get some shut eye.
Weight loss. Ah, such a topic. We are bombarded from all sides by plans and techniques for taking and keeping weight off. Very few people have missed the experience at one time or another of following some crazy diet that eliminates all but just a few foods.
No plan, technique, or fad diet will work permanently. Losing weight is basically a plus-and-minus deal: Burn more calories than you eat and the numbers will go down. There is fine print in the deal (like making sure to eat a minimum number of calories daily to avoid putting the body into “starvation mode”), but generally speaking it’s a numbers game.
Taking off weight is a case of different strokes for different folks. One plan works for this person, another plan works for that person. One method that has been around for ages depends on the numbers game: Keep a daily journal of the calories you eat.
Have you tried to keep an eating journal? It used to be kind of a pain for all but the most obsessive number crunchers. Even with computers and internet databases, recording food eaten and then figuring out the calories was time consuming–and really easy to stop doing!
Well, now there’s an app for fat! Actually, there are quite a few apps, but here is one that at least one Garboite has experience with: My Fitness Pal. With both a website and a smartphone/tablet app, the task of logging and calculating calories is a snap!
My Fitness Pal uses information about your weight, activity level, and weight loss goals to calculate your daily calorie “budget.” Log the food you eat by finding it on the site’s ever-growing database (MFP users keep adding foods!), and the site lets you know how many calories you have left for the day. Log your exercise (another growing database) and MFP will “credit” those calories to your daily total. And enter the numbers when you weigh yourself, and MFP will keep track of all the pounds you shed!
There is more good stuff. There is a discussion board full of topic areas and very participative “talkers.” There are virtual support groups you can join. And you can “friend” other MFPers to get and receive individual support.
All this, and it’s FREE!!!
If counting calories in and out is a weight loss method that appeals to you, check out My Fitness Pal. It’s a great tool to get less of you!
Jordan Broussard, Garbo’s make up expert, offers important tips for keeping your “canvas,” also known as your face, in wonderful condition.
Most of you spend HOURS a week applying your favorite makeup, but most (if not all) of you do not spend enough time focusing on your skin or as I like to call it, your canvas.
The most important advice I can give as a beauty professional is to take care of and properly prep your skin before any application; some make up contains harmful chemicals that can dry out or even cause your skin to break out (a sign to quit using). Through proper care and preparation of your skin you will be able to better prevent these harmful chemicals from penetrating your skin; hopefully, you may quit using them all together.
Here are some important tips to help get you and your skin back on track and staying in good condition:
Our own Amanda Heithoff weighs in on a topic she knows really well — your hair. Here are some of her thoughts about those times when we want a change in our tresses.
Do you want your hair to move, shine, and style like the celebs? If your answer is yes, than treat it like a celebrities hair stylist would. Just because these A-listers are a vibrant red one week and platinum blonde the next, it doesn’t mean their stylist did it in a 2-hour appointment.
Ladies, if you want a dramatic color change, think about the length of your hair and what is the condition of your ends. If those ends aren’t in good shape you must realize that if you’re going lighter in a dramatic fashion, breakage could be the result. Listen to your stylist; if she or he suspects this may happen then take a softer more gentle approach. Don’t compromise the health of your hair so much that once you achieve the desired color people are noticing the poor condition of your hair more than your color.
If you want a deeper, darker change, stay away from over the counter “box” colors. Even though doing it yourself might save you some money, it won’t save your hair. Box color is much more difficult to remove from the hair if you ever want to go lighter. Also professional color lines (especially Aveda) provide much more moisture and accuracy when applying. It is in our human instinct to need a little change here and there, just don’t constantly be using your hair to full-fill this need, otherwise it may result in jeopardizing the integrity of your locks! Remember if your having an itch to change your hair color consult a professional and take a gentle approach, even if it means two appointments with a little time in between, your hair will appreciate it. Be kind to your hair!
