The Ins and Outs of Bangs

Our own Kelly Mclean weighs in on the beauty of bangs…

There is a question that I believe at some point every woman has asked herself, and
possibly anyone who will listen: Should I have bangs?

According to Summer 2011 trend reports, the answer is YES!

So now what? In addition to simply wondering about bangs most of us have also tried them, but not necessarily the right ones for our face.

Take a good hard look at the shape of your face and divide it into three sections:

  1. hairline to eyebrow,
  2. eyebrow to bottom of nose, and
  3. bottom of nose to bottom of chin.

Take note if one section is bigger or smaller than the other two. If your forehead is the smallest then longer bangs will be better than eyebrow length bangs, as these may make your face appear larger than it is. Usually bangs that end at the eye or cheekbone will bring balance to your face and bring focus to your eyes with a touch of flirty-ness. Now, if the sections are equal or if your forehead is the largest than you can most likely rock long bangs, as well as brow length or short bangs.

OK, back to the mirror. What is the widest part of your face? Is it long or round?

Typically round faces can pull off more height in bangs and look great in side-swept styles. They should avoid brow length bangs that get longer next to the eyes; This shape will only create more of a circle. Instead, if you are going for a full bang (not side-swept) go shorter at the temples or keep the line straight. If your forehead is the widest, most styles of bangs will help to detract from it, but avoid too much volume. If your jaw is the widest then go big, but stay away from overly layered bangs or back swept. That is one eighties trend that no one should replicate.

Finally….remember to always trust your gut…and your stylist!

Clothes to Look Slimmer

by Kristie Brown

If the billion-dollar diet industry had its way, we’d all be whisper-thin holograms of ourselves — virtually see-through. But what American women really need is a little Elvis Costello and some peace, love and understanding. All those calorie-starved diet fads and fiber bars that taste like drywall are for a future body. So what’s a normal girl with a normal body gonna do as she’s working away this bulge or that roll? She turns that peace, love and understanding inward and selects some fabu clothes that rock her body like she’s been on a steady diet of woodchip protein bars since the womb.

Dress To Impress
A dress is the go-to piece in every woman’s closet. It’s the thing you pull out when when you’re feeling a little luscious and what you grab when you’re feeling a little humpty dumpty. If designed well, a dress will hide your problem areas as it emphasizes your assets. Style editor of Seattle Magazine, Hope Misterek, recommends an A-line dress for a universal flattering fit. The construction of the skirt pulls the eye away from ample hips and missing waists and down toward the legs, creating an illusion of lean length. “Materials with structure like sheath dresses, help a lot, too,” she adds. A sheath dress that’s cut to emphasize the waist will whittle your middle. Color blocking is also a strategic design trick that pulls the eye toward bold colors and away from darker colors that are arranged to create a silhouette sleight of hand.

View From The Top
Pay special attention to the mood of the shirt, as well as its fit, to ensure it’s not a second skin that calls attention to areas you’re trying to camouflage. Think sexy kitten more than cat in heat. Be on the lookout for a structured shirt that has a slightly defined waist and pin tucks that help the shirt maintain its shape. If sexy kitten is still up for grabs, then leave one more button unbuttoned. Shirts that ruche around your stomach are particularly talented articles of clothing; the fabric bunching simultaneously disguises any inches you can pinch as it makes you look thinner through the middle. And while we’ve all known since junior high that dark colors create negative spaces that minus your plus parts, don’t be afraid of bolder colors in flattering designs.

Bottoms Up
“One of the easiest and most important things to do is make sure your hems hit the ground. You want the longest leg line possible. Pants or slacks that are straight coming from your largest point will also help to create a straighter, longer leg line, which could even mean a wide-leg pant,” says Misterek, who is also an international fashion and wardrobe stylist. And listen, if your age means you’re puzzled by the phrase “mom jeans,” then it’s time to back away from the favorite of muffin tops everywhere, the low rise. Your mama’s high-waisted jeans and pants are back, and they’re rocked by the likes of Katie Holmes and Kim Kardashian — opposites on the shape spectrum — yet they both look amazingly trim with their legs going up to there.

A Strong Foundation
What your grandmother called a girdle, you call shapewear. And if it’s good enough for your sturdy grandma and the emaciated 00-sized starlet, then honey, it’s good enough for you. Those choke bands hug your curves and hide your rolls, making your clothes fall as they were designed. And if you don’t have on the right bra underneath all these great magic tricks made from fabric and thread, then you’ll only look like you stopped retaining water and not that you just dropped 10 pounds. Misterek recommends one last piece of advice that’s a shoe-in, “Wear heels, and find the highest heel possible that you can manage all day.”

Pesto Minus Pounds

Making sure we get our greens is no problem when it comes to pesto. Basil, spinach, cilantro–whatever green you like best–with pine nuts or walnuts (toasted, if you want), garlic (is there such a thing as too much garlic?), and fresh grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese is a combination that is hard to beat.

The thing that makes pesto not so much a diet food is that pesky olive oil that you drizzled in while the food processor is running. Traditional pesto is so high in fat that it nearly cancels out the beneficial nutrition of the other ingredients.

Well, there is good news for you calorie conscious pesto fans. Creative cooks have come up with a way to cut the fat in a pesto recipe: Substitute chicken broth for all or part of the oil. The more broth you can use in place of oil, the better, but chances are you are still going to want to keep some of the oil, especially if you are using the high quality extra virgin stuff.

So whip up a batch of low-fat pesto and spread it around. On chicken, tossed with hot or cold pasta, on bread or crackers, and on anything else you can think of!

Loving Long Hair

We broke the news in our March newsletter that the focus for spring is on long hair.

We haven’t seen so much long hair on the runways and fashion magazines since Farrah’s feathered do back in the 70s. Loose braids and long flowing hair is HOT!

Call it bed head, touseled, or ragamuffin, hair stylists at New York’s Fashion Week this year created this natural look for their models. Another interesting style on the runways was the braid in a variety of forms. From tightly woven tresses from part to tip to lovely loose braids along the nape of the neck, the common element was lots of long hair.

Here is a video of stylist Christian Siriano showing a trick used on models for the runway.

Don’t have long hair? Give us a call! We’ll show you how hair extensions can give you the look you want.
